Unable to sleep due to an extremely annoying tickly cough, I was sitting up watching TV at 1am when the whole building started to shake. All the birds stopped singing (why they were singing at 1am is beyond me anyway!) and the quake/tremor lasted for about 60 seconds.
The birds are now singing again and all appears to be well. I’ve searched for news but of course it’s early days – however a friend on Facebook has reported an earthquake in Derby too!
Update: 1:12am – another Facebook report of a quake in Nottingham.
Update: 1:15am – nothing yet on BBC, but more news via Twitter and Tweetscan: “moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 hits UK – no news of damage or injuries”.
Update: 1:20am – US Geological Survy has more – apparently the epicentre was approximately Lincoln.

My name is Ricky Rew and I’m addicted to Threadless.
I’ve just completed a long overdue update to the Threadless page to add the shirts from my last three orders – another 18 shirts!! The question I’m asked most often is “where do you get your cool/excellent/great/funny t-shirts from?”. The answer, of course, is Threadless. The second most popular question is “how many Threadless t-shirts do you have?”. To be honest I didn’t know the answer – so I thought I’d count up.

Major Andrew Olmsted of the US Army died in Iraq on January 3rd 2008. He wrote a moving final entry for his website and asked a friend to post it in the event of his death. You should read the whole entry, but here are a few quotes:
This is an entry I would have preferred not to have published, but there are limits to what we can control in life, and apparently I have passed one of those limits…
What I don’t want this to be is a chance for me, or anyone else, to be maudlin. I’m dead. That sucks, at least for me and my family and friends. But all the tears in the world aren’t going to bring me back, so I would prefer that people remember the good things about me rather than mourning my loss. (If it turns out a specific number of tears will, in fact, bring me back to life, then by all means, break out the onions.)
Sometimes going to war is the right idea. I think we’ve drawn that line too far in the direction of war rather than peace, but I’m a soldier and I know that sometimes you have to fight if you’re to hold onto what you hold dear. But in making that decision, I believe we understate the costs of war; when we make the decision to fight, we make the decision to kill, and that means lives and families destroyed. Mine now falls into that category; the next time the question of war or peace comes up, if you knew me at least you can understand a bit more just what it is you’re deciding to do, and whether or not those costs are worth it.

Having been ‘offline’ all week with flu, and with bad wind being a consequence of the illness, I was surprised when I briefly ventured outside this morning to find there were further wind problems.
During the night and early morning there were gales in MK and before getting into the car we couldn’t help but notice what a lucky escape the car had. You won’t be surprised to hear that the fence panel in the picture shouldn’t be anywhere near the car, or leaning up against the wall.
A lucky escape…now let’s hope it gets fixed before the wind gets up again.
